The Sense of Touch

Title: The Sense of Touch

Author: Ron Parsons

Published: May 1st, 2013

Publisher: Aqueous Books

Genre: Literary Fiction – A collection of short stories

Age Recommendation: 15+

Synopsis

Sprung from the variously lush, rugged, and frozen emotional landscapes of the north country, this luminous collection of stories captures the progress of a diverse ensemble of souls as they struggle to uncover themselves and negotiate a meaningful communion, of any kind, with the world around them.

A brilliant but troubled Bangladeshi physics student searches for balance, acceptance, and his own extraordinary destiny after his father disappears.

When a Halloween blizzard immobilizes Minneapolis, a young woman is forced to confront the snow-bound nature of her own relationships and emotions.

During an excursion to an idyllic swimming hole hidden in the Black Hills, two old friends unexpectedly compete for the affections of an irresistible, though married, Lakota woman.

Like a mythical expedition to reach the horizon or the quest to distill truth from the beauty around us, the revelation confirmed by these imaginative stories – elegant, sometimes jarring, always wonderfully absurd – is that the very act of reaching is itself a form of touch.

For no reason that she could discern, she put down the novel and picked up her cell phone. She was lonely, yes, but had been so for as long as she cared to remember, and nothing seemed to be pressing that particular bruise, one of many, at the moment. Her loneliness was at a comfortable echelon: not growing like a tree, nor multiplying as a moss, but just simply there. A permanent, weathered embedded rock. A boulder in the wheat field. A bullet inside of a body, too dangerous to remove, around which tissue grows.

“It took all of twelve hours from the time I found your picture in GQ to getting your address from Ceravolo’s assistant,” she said.

“Your point?” Gale asked.

She bit down her frustration. “Okay, so maybe you just had to leave Levine because your life sucked beyond belief. I didn’t search for you after you left, not like your Dad did—”

Gale’s eyes flicked to hers.

“—And he did,” she said. “Until it left him dry. But I found you. I don’t usually believe in such things, but I think there’s a reason—”

“—Ah, God—”

“—Not like that.” She tightened her fists until the gash on her palm twinged. “Don’t you think someone might miss him—that man we found? He must have a family, someone who wonders day after day where he is, and whether he’s safe, and why he left. I know what that’s like to wait and wait for someone who never comes home.”

He stared at her.

“Someone needs to know he’s never coming home.”

“Mer,” he said.

“So I’m going back.”

“No—”

“—Yes. I’m going back,” she said.

“Meredith, no.”

A laugh broke from her, a low, bitter sound. “And you’re coming with me.”

Gale was up again. He shoved the table. “Why?” he said. “Why would I do that? Why would I go back to the Bible-Thumping, Proud-to-Be-Confederacy Capital of Texas. Why?”

“Because you were there—”

“—Oh, I know what this is,” he said, stabbing a finger at her. “Miss Barbie Princess fell down and cracked her head. Found out you’re not so impenetrable in your Malibu Dream House?”

She sputtered, speechless.

“That’s right, I know,” he said. “I read it all on Yahoo! News. Live-in girlfriend of Jerome fucking Snow.”

She pressed cold fingertips to her eyelids. “Oh no.”

Gale said, “He know you’re here?”

“No. He doesn’t.” She opened her eyes and re-focused. “This isn’t about him.”

Gale took the empty chair beside her. “Hey, if you’re running, I’ll run, too. Got nothing tying me here.”

“I’m not running.”

“Really?” He traced the bandage on her forehead. “Mr. Playboy Billionaire do this?”

“I’m not running,” she said again. “Not from him.”

Gale looked as though he still had his doubts.

“You remember that summer?” she said. “All the stunts we pulled, all the trouble?”

His lips pulled into a lop-sided smile. “Spray-painting the trestle bridge—”

“—Getting caught sneaking out of my bedroom window—”

“—Lest we forget ramping my Dad’s Harley into the Levine Middle School Marquee,” Gale said. He rolled his shoulder at the memory. “Broke my arm—”

“—You’re lucky it wasn’t your neck.”

“And the shoplifting,” he said, grinning now. “From Two Sisters Christian Books. Guess I’m going to Hell for that one.”

“You remember what you took?”

A muscle in his neck twitched. “Yeah, I remember.”

“You remember what you said when you gave it to me?”

He lowered his eyes. “I said so long as you wore it, I’d be with you,” he said. “I promised.”

Meredith pulled the platinum chain from under her camisole. The nautilus pendant swung between her face and his. “You promised.”

“Fuck,” he said and lit another cigarette. And Meredith knew, for better or worse, that Gale would follow her home.

Excerpt from Trails of Secrets by Laura Wolfe:
Jett plodded rhythmically through the pristine landscape. The earthy scent of pine needles, tree moss, and raspberries filled Brynlei’s senses. Wild raspberry bushes sprouted up along the trail, their thorns threatening to impale anyone who reached for the ripe fruit. A small creek with crystal clear water babbled to the right of the trail. She could see straight through the rushing water to the leaves and stones on the bottom.
Anna turned back toward Brynlei. “We’re stopping for minute to let the horses drink from the creek. Pass it on.”
Brynlei passed the same message back to Kaitlyn. She guided Jett over to the creek and let him stretch his head toward the water. Out of the corner of her eye, Brynlei saw something dart behind one of the trees in the distance. She would have dismissed it as a squirrel or a deer, but it was too tall. It almost looked like a person, but then it was gone. The hairs on Brynlei’s neck stood on end. The dark energy prickled her skin. She could feel someone watching her. Jett jerked his head up and perked his ears toward the trees beyond the creek. His nostrils flared and his feet danced. He was on alert and so was Brynlei.

Excerpt from Wind River Refuge by J.M. Anton:
She scanned the immediate area again. “Well, there isn’t anyone around here that even resembles a McBride.” Dexter, and the rest of the male clan she was acquainted with, all had auburn or darker brown hair with a red cast. “What does he look like?”

“He’s very tall.”

“Come on Maggie, a little help here? You know that half the world looks tall to me.” Her disgusted observation brought a chuckle from the other end of the line.

“Oh… say, six foot four, broad shoulders, black hair and beard. Probably wearing jeans and a Stetson.” Jax was busy scanning the crowd while she listened to Maggie’s description of her assigned pilot.

“Wait a minute.” Phone receiver placed safely on the counter, she cautiously made her way around a column near the baggage claim carousel. All of the McBride men were big, but this one was even larger than the rest! She prayed, “Please, let him be someone else.” She sucked oxygen into her lungs, like a swimmer preparing for a deep dive, let it out slowly and skirted around the far side of the large column near where he stood. Jax mastered her trepidation and approached slowly, once she finished assessing the, dark, stranger from a safe distance. It was a supreme effort to sound calm and confident. “McBride?”

He looked down at her from his towering height. “You Jax?”

All she could manage was to nod her head. He was easily a foot taller than her, and had to weigh twice as much. She quickly executed a sharp one-eighty and fought the urge to run back to the phone. Her mouth suddenly felt dry and gritty! The usually simple reflex of breathing became a struggle. God! He was intimidating. At least Dexter was a known quantity, and his six foot two athletic frame didn’t bother her anymore. Fingers trembling, she fumbled with the receiver on the counter. Jax informed Maggie she’d found Garrett. Of course, Maggie wanted to speak with him. She turned around with the intention to call him over to the phone, and nearly jumped out of her skin. He stood right behind her, and she ran smack into his large muscular form.

“Shit!”

“Nice language,” he told her with obvious disapproval.

“You scared the hell out of me! I didn’t realize you were there.” He looked at her as if she were simple minded. Jax shoved the phone at him, and then all but ran to claim her luggage.

A billion butterflies battered Lexi’s stomach. She shifted her attention from Ross to the piano. Sure enough, the music had stopped, and Jake faced her from his seat on the bench. Man oh man, the heavy stare from those sky blue eyes sent shivers skittering down her spine. His gaze held the same intensity she remembered from him as a kid, as if he saw into the heart of people, exposing their deepest secrets. It drove her crazy back then, and she’d spent much time teasing him, pulling his hair, trying to distract him from being so serious all of the damn time. They were teenagers—partying was supposed to be their sole focus.

With his ice blue stare locked on her, Jake rose to his feet, all taut muscle and predatory power. His energy swept over her like a tsunami, forcing all of the moisture to abandon her mouth while parts much lower wept with want. Her inner Wolf howled, answering the call of this Alpha, the first Dominant male ever to make her sit up and take notice. Holy crap. Her muscles shook with the need to bound over to him, jump in his arms, wrap her legs around his torso and writhe against his hard, hot, tattooed body.

Jake said something to his uncle then stalked straight at her, cutting a path right through the middle of the tables and the many, too-curious patrons.

A whimper escaped her throat.

Surprise sparked in her brother’s brown eyes. “You’re kidding me. Him?” He burst out laughing. “Wow, sis, that’s some major, big time irony right there.”

Darci’s expression conveyed her bewilderment. “Now what are you two talking about?”

Her annoying brother grinned. “See that angry Alpha headed our way? My sister here rejected him when they were teens and he’s apparently her—”

Lexi socked her brother in the ribs. “Shut it, Ross.”

“Ouch.” Ross rubbed his side and chuckled at her plight. The jerk.

“Come on, Lexi, you have to admit the hilarity of the situation.”

No, she did not. Nor did she have to admit that J-Bird was right all those years ago. He was her mate. O to the M to the G… They were mates.

Even so, he didn’t look happy to see her at all. In fact, he looked positively enraged. Shit, shit and triple shit. What a mess she’d made eight years ago. Well, she was woman enough to pull on her big girl panties and fix it. She straightened her spine and lifted her chin in challenge, meeting Jake’s stormy stare. He halted before her.

I can do this. “Hey J-Bird. Nice to see you.” Lovely. Her voice sounded like she’d eaten the gravel from the lot in front of Gee’s bar. Embarrassment heated her cheeks.

One breath, two breaths, three… J-Bird glared. Tension coiled between them in the silence. Lexi bit the inside of her cheek to avoid babbling at him. She’d said hello. It was his turn. Damn it, J-Bird, say something. He wasn’t making this easy.

“Alexina.” His arctic tone dismissed her and slapped her in the face at the same time, leaving her disappointed and confused. No one called her by her full name. No one except her parents when she’d done something wrong as a kid. He might as well have said, “screw you,” while slamming a door in her face.

His focus shifted to her brother. “Hello, Ross. Been a while.” His hand shot out to grasp her brother’s in a cordial shake.

“Good to see you, Jake. Join us for lunch? My treat. We can catch up on old times.”

“No, thank you. I’m done. Nice to see you again, Ross.” Jake nodded at Darci. “Miss.” He brushed past them and out the door.

“What. Just. Happened?” The “I’m done,” he uttered in his delicious British accent seemed aimed more at her than at her brother’s offer. And the fact he hadn’t even looked at her before stalking out all sexy in his gloom and doom? Yeah, that hurt.

“I think you know, sis.” The amusement left her brother’s face and sympathy glimmered in his gaze. “Question is, what are you going to do about it?”

She’d never run from a fight in her life. She wouldn’t start now. “Grab a table. I’ll be back in a second. Or not.” She ignored her brother’s knowing grin and hurried out the door.

SEAL the Deal, a stand-alone novel, is book one in the new series, Alpha SEALs.

Excerpt from SEAL the Deal by Makenna Jameison:

“And what keeps you up at night?” he asked huskily, watching her blush again at the sexual undertones of his question.“Work,” she finally replied, recovering, as she met his blue gaze.

He grinned at her, trying to put her more at ease. “You’re too easy to tease,” he finally admitted. It wasn’t like him to want to put anyone at ease, but something about this woman had him feeling possessive and protective at the same time. Not to mention incredibly, uncomfortably, aroused.

“It’s not nice to tease people,” Abby said innocently, and Rebecca and Patrick both burst into laughter.

“You’re not having any ice cream either,” Rebecca pointed out.

He shrugged, not really caring to explain that he was on a strict training regimen. “So Rebecca,” he said, enjoying the way the sound of her name felt on his lips, “do you and Abby frequent the playground often?”

“Yes!” Abby shouted.

Rebecca smiled at her daughter and looked back to him. “It’s pretty much our Sunday afternoon tradition when the weather is good.”

He considered that, wanting to see her again without knowing entirely why. “Maybe Logan and I will see you here next weekend?”

“I’d like that.”

He stared at her a moment longer then he should have and then stood. “Come on, buddy, let’s get going.” Logan jumped to his feet, and Patrick rested his hand on his son’s shoulder before meeting Rebecca’s eyes. “Stay safe,” he said, before turning to leave. He could feel her eyes watching him as they walked out the front door, and it took absolutely all of his strength not to look back.

Wicked-Luck

With a satisfied grin, I drop the book in my pocket and step out from behind the tree.

Well, well, well. What a predicament. Gives new meaning to the phrase ‘sticky situation’ doesn’t it?” My voice startles her and causes a sharp intake of breath as she opens her eyes.

Dax,” she says with a relieved exhale.

Hey princess.” I give her my best Cheshire smile. “Looks like your little escape plan didn’t work out so well, huh? Well, I hope you have better luck escaping from that pit of quicksand.”

I turn to walk away.

Wait! Where are you going?” she asks, and desperation oozes from her voice.

I pause to get control of the amusement cracking away at my serious expression before turning around. “I don’t know. I think I’ll head back to the beach and wait for a hot blonde to wash up on shore.” Her mouth falls open right on cue. “Oh, and sorry to break it to ya’, but you didn’t get the part. Since it’s my fantasy, I was looking for someone friendlier, a little more trusting, a little less sassy, and what was the last thing? Oh, yeah. Someone who actually likes me. But don’t feel bad—you nailed the physical profile,” I say with a wink.

Stop being a jerk and help me,” she says, and then softens her tone. “Please?”

I uncross my arms and rest my hands on my hips. I’m pretty sure she already regrets that last comment, but I can’t stop now. “Look, princess. I’m a lot of things, but a jerk isn’t one of them. And don’t worry; I’m sure someone else will find you soon. A hungry cannibal—or Roxy. And I’m starting to think you and her might make a good team. The pity-party duo. She’s hateful, complains constantly, and she’s also a member of the ‘I hate Dax club’, just like you.”

I turn my back on her again and take a step.

Wait! I don’t hate you. Please don’t leave me. I’m sorry.”

I’m a sucker for apologies but when I turn to face her, I can’t resist putting one hand behind my ear and tilting my head.

I’m really sorry,” she says again. “For running away and being so grumpy.” I wait for more, and she grits her teeth. “And for not listening to you.”

This is the part where I know she expects me to jump to her rescue, but I lean against a tree with a cocky grin and pull a banana from my pocket. She stares while I peel it, take a bite, and chew slowly. I’m savoring the fruit but also my triumph in having the upper hand.

Aren’t you going to help me?” she finally asks with a hint of worry.

I’m still debating. If I leave you here, at least I’ll know where you are and won’t have to worry about you running off. I could even build a little hut around you and toss you food and water now and then. You’d be a lot less trouble that way.”

Very funny,” she says, but I think it is and I can’t keep from laughing.

Shannon-Maynard

Shannon L. Maynard lives in Colorado with her five girls where she is a legal assistant by day and an author by night. In between working and writing she can be found driving kids to soccer, folding mountains of pink laundry, or eating her weight in chocolate. Other addictions include shoe shopping, reading YA, and Australian and British accents (which may be partly to blame for her massive crush on Thor). If she had one wish it would be for more hours in the day to spend enjoying all of the above. Okay, everything except the laundry.

Shannon studied art and criminology before getting a license in cosmetology, but eventually wound up an expert daydreamer; a skill that occasionally leads to getting lost while driving, but has been a huge asset to her love for writing. Her debut novel WICKED LUCK is set to release June 2015 and is the first book in the Wicked Luck Trilogy.

Protecting Cheyenne Book Blast

Well, I’m very disappointed.  Google images has let me down.  I wanted a picture of a cannon shooting out books, or at the very least something like a t-shirt gun shooting books into a crowd, but evidently no such image exists.  That’s too bad, because today we have a book blast!  This is where you get to have a blast with books!  Well, sort of.  A book blast is somewhere between a one day book blitz and a multiple day book tour.  A book blast usually lasts two or three days, with several blogs each day posting information about a book.  It’s just another promotional tool that authors use to bring attention to their work.

Turn on your air conditioner because all of Susan Stoker’s book covers seem to have those delicious abs on them!  Where’s my quarters to bounce off of them?!

Protecting Jessyka

Just who is this author with a penchant for “ab”solutely f”ab”oulous covers?

Susan-Stoker

Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Texas where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, and Indiana. She’s married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.

As Mr. Stoker says, Susan has been training to become a romance author her entire life. She’s been reading romances since middle school and writes what she loves.

She debuted her first series in 2014 and quickly followed that up with the SEAL of Protection Series, which solidified her love of writing and creating stories readers can get lost in.

About these steamy books!

Protecting Cheyenne:

Living in Southern California, Cheyenne was used to seeing hot military men as she went about her daily business. An anonymous encounter at the grocery store cemented her crush on one such man. He was big, built, and incredibly easy on the eyes, but it wasn’t as if he would ever really notice her.

Always in control of any situation, Faulkner “Dude” Cooper knows explosives. As a bomb expert, he’s lived through many high pressure situations. Disfigured by a bomb while on a mission, he’s used to being looked at with pity. When he’s called to a local supermarket to assist the local PD, the last thing he expects to find is a generous act of kindness performed by a beautiful, amazing woman. Enchanted by her selflessness in the face of danger and intrigued by her actions to save civilians she didn’t know, Dude’s hooked.

Dude was able to save Cheyenne from the group of thugs trying to take her life, but when the past comes back to haunt them both, sometimes having the knowledge and the desire isn’t enough to beat the countdown of the clock.

**Protecting Cheyenne is the 5th book in the SEAL of Protection Series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s recommended you read the books in order to get maximum enjoyment out of the series.

Protecting Jessyka:

Kason “Benny” Sawyer was the last single man on his Navy SEAL team. He loved his teammates like brothers and respected each and every one of their women. They’d all been through hell and they deserved their current happiness. But seeing the love between his friends and their women made it tough to be the odd man out all the time.

Jessyka Allen had a good life, until it wasn’t anymore. Finding herself in an impossible situation, with no noticeable way out, her job was an escape. Working at the small Bar and Grill put her in contact with some wonderful people, who Jess figured couldn’t ever understand what she was going through.

Being a SEAL, Benny thought he knew the true meaning of teamwork and friendship. But Jess would show him that everything he thought he knew about sacrifice, trust, and love, paled in comparison to what she brought into his world.

**Protecting Jessyka is the 6th book in the SEAL of Protection Series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s recommended you read the books in order to get maximum enjoyment out of the series.
