Kex and Hailan

Kex curled her knees tight against her chest. She breathed in slow, deep breaths. Her weapon felt cold beneath her palm. Rough boards rasped against her cheek as she pressed her face to the floor. Muffled footsteps approached – barefoot, if she had to guess. She tightened her fist around the weapon and waited. The angle was wrong, but she was too small to overpower him in a close fight. She would rely on quickness and the element of surprise. He would never think to find her here.

Her pulse quickened as the footfalls paused. The door opened on a well-oiled hinge. A sphere of lamplight revealed two hairy ankles, and – just as she hoped – two naked feet. Kex drew a breath and waited.

Closer, she thought. Come closer. I dare you.

Lamplight and legs loomed nearer but still out of reach. The lamp’s handle squeaked as he set it upon the table. Then he turned and shuffled forward, giving her an unpleasant glimpse of his toenails. Inches away, then half-inches, then precisely where she wanted him.

Kex lashed out, stabbing down into the top of his foot. He howled and hopped – as she hoped – and she kicked out, her heel connecting with his ankle, knocking his other foot out from beneath him.

He scrabbled to his side, quick for his size, but by then she had used his own leg to haul herself from beneath the bed. She vaulted astride him, pressing her weapon to his freshly-shaven throat.

“Where is it?” she hissed.

Eyes wide, he glanced from her to the weapon pressed into his neck.

“Oh, by the Saints,” he moaned.

She bore down, sinking it deeper into his skin. “I asked you a question.”

He stammered, then refocused. “Is that a fork?”

“Aye.” The skin blanched around the tines as she leaned her weight into it. “I can make you bleed with a fork.”

“I think you already did,” he whined. She noted that he lay very, very still as he said, “C’mon, Kex, what’s this about?”

She narrowed her eyes. “Don’t play around, Hailan Chase. You know well what I want.”

“Nope.” Hailan carefully shook his head. “Not me.”

“I may not kill you with this,” Kex said through her teeth. She bore down enough to make him squirm. “But I will maim you – four perfect little cuts – and everywhere you go, from this day forward, everyone will know that Lady Kex took you down with a utensil.”

“Oh, Lady, is it?” Hailan said.

“Don’t change the subject,” she said. “Where is my book?”

“Hmm… Book?”

“The Codex, damn it. Where is it?”

Hailan raised his hands. “Xylo has it.”

“Your sister?” Kex clicked her tongue.

“She’s awful clever.”

“She’s eight.”

Kex felt his weight shift. She knew this maneuver. If he thought he was going to roll her, she had to ensure he was too frightened to try. She flicked her wrist, caught the fork with her left hand, and positioned it above his eye.

His dilating pupils told her all she needed to know. He wouldn’t be moving. He might not dare to breathe.

“It is my Mother’s book,” Kex said. “I want it back.”

Hailan swallowed several gulps of air. “She’s a curious girl, my sister. You’re the only Elsekind she’s ever seen.”

Kex hissed through her teeth. Hailan cringed.

She said, “Xylo’s seen Alusians.”

“That’s different,” he said. “You’re different. I mean, not different, not like Halfkin different, but you’re not the same.” He moaned. “You know what I mean.”

Kex eased back but kept the fork pointed at his face. Yes, she knew what he meant. All too well. “With my permission, Xylo may borrow any object in my possession. But you will not take them without asking. Nod if you understand.”

Hailan nodded. He looked like he might be sick.

“Go now and fetch it back,” Kex said. She got to her feet and moved to the door. “I will meet you and Aralund on the pitch in one half hour.”

Hailan massaged his neck. As she opened the door, he said, “Kex, I was only playing.”

Though she saw his sincerity, she could not afford to soften. She said, “I know that. Which is why you I leave you unharmed.” With a smirk, she added, “Well. Mostly.”

CHAPTER TWENTY

Titus wandered back into his room after seeing Catherine was back in control. Closing his eyes, he leaned his forehead against the door and expelled a controlled sigh.
God…he wanted her like he’d never wanted anything before. He turned and sat down on the edge of the mattress as he struggled to understand what was happening to him. An enthralled, catastrophic feeling had taken hold of him. Somehow, he had a feeling, deep in his gut, that his life would never be the same again, that he’d irrevocably crossed a line. What line, he didn’t know, but there had to have been a line to feel as differently as he did about Lady Catherine.
He hated seeing her cry. He couldn’t stand it when women cried. In normal circumstances, he would have bolted, but being a guest in her home, he found himself running to her rescue, and what he’d found had left him shaken to the core. He had responded to her more powerfully than he’d reacted to some of his most torrid sexual encounters.
His thoughts were in turmoil, and his body still smoldering from the feeling of Catherine’s warm silken flesh beneath his fingers as he’d accidently brushed the underside of her breast while buttoning her shirt. He didn’t think he would ever forget the picture she made; lying on that bed, her hair spread out around her in total disarray, her shirt undone, exposing all her feminine glory to his hungry gaze. She was the most exotic creature he’d ever seen, and he’d seen his share of beautiful women.
It was one of the most difficult things he’d ever had to do, attempting to keep his body under control while trying to be chivalrous. He was thankful Catherine had been too distraught to look at him properly because she would have seen the evidence of her effect on him.
What a damnable situation, he thought savagely, as he tried to get his thoughts back under control so he could return to bed. He doubted he’d be doing any sleeping for the rest of the night. He would be counting the hours until dawn so he could take his leave of Lady Wellesley. She didn’t have to concern herself with making him feel welcome in her home. She made it very clear by her reaction to his genuine offer of help that she found him repulsive.
The unfortunate thing was, although she’d made it very clear that she didn’t welcome his help and he understood her, Titus’ body was not hearing. It was as if it had a mind of its own and couldn’t wait to have her, out of that shirt and exhausted in his arms.
With thoughts like these, he just didn’t trust himself around her, so the sooner he left Chatterwoods, the better it would be for his peace of mind.
He never thought when he’d agreed to accompany his sister and brother-in-law to this rural village; he would find the woman who would capture his heart.
Titus had been looking to escape his last bit of fun; she was becoming a bore. Louisa was a very passionate woman who took great pleasure in cuckolding her husband, a man almost twice her age. It was no love match. He had remained with her longer than he’d intended. For one thing, he felt sorry for her. She broke into hysterics every time he brought up the subject of ending things between them. He hated the tears, so Titus had given in, but when she had begun showing up wherever he went, making a nuisance of herself, he knew it was time to end it. How she did it was beyond him, but she seemed to know where he’d be before he even knew himself.
To be honest, he’d fully expected to see her in the guest party. He had breathed a sigh of relief when he had not seen her name on the guest list. But it appeared he had a bigger problem than Louisa if the way his body refused to settle down was any indication.
He lay in the bed, awake until he heard the house beginning to stir, signaling the rising of the other guests. He took his time using the plumbing system that had been installed in the house. The water flowed at a good rate. He found it nice not to have to wait for the servants to carry buckets of hot water to pour into a tub for him to take a bath.
The tub in the washroom was huge. It would require several buckets of water to fill it. It was one of the biggest Titus had ever seen, but at the rate the water was being piped into it, the tub was filled in no time. When he tested the temperature, the water was not very hot. He hadn’t figured out the temperature control correctly. He stepped in and out of the tub almost immediately. It could hardly be called a bath, but it worked to quiet his body. He was able to dress without his irritated appendage getting in the way.

Excerpt

Snowflakes danced and swirled beyond the windowpane, capturing the sun’s rays, glistening like diamonds as they drifted, mesmerizing me as I stood by and watched without a care in the world. Mother Nature had trapped me tight within her grasp. I was drawn into her beauty and magnetic, overpowering energy. Snowflakes accumulated, forming small mounds and snow drifts, and I viewed the scene as if through the lens of time-lapse photography. I sensed danger was near, yet felt warm and peaceful inside. And then I sensed nothing at all.

***

My instincts snapped me into a state of high alert as I searched carefully inside a dimly lit room, arms outstretched, hoping I wouldn’t bump into something and wound myself.

I blinked my eyes repeatedly and as my vision returned, images penetrated my consciousness. Eyesight sharpened, I spied a shimmering, oval, mahogany table with twelve handsomely crafted wooden chairs with etched frames and deep-cushioned red-velvet seats. The table caught the sunlight peeking in from beyond the dining room, through the kitchen window with its tiny panes of glass and lattice framing. It was of a time long ago.

I approached the back door and peeked out through a tall, narrow side window. I gasped as I spied a dense forest filled with 100-year-old pine, birch, oak, and black walnut trees all coexisting as one, their branches intertwined. Something seemed familiar about this place. I found my courage and it urged me to continue exploring my new surroundings. I passed through a low-set hallway and noticed two bedrooms across from one another. Each room contained twin beds, and I assumed the children’s room was the one with colourful quilts adorned with patches of birds and animals.

There were carvings in that particular room which drew me in. One carving was of a beaver, another was of a moose, and the third a wolf’s head. It was much larger than the others, and it captured my attention, as the wolf was a kindred spirit to me. I ran my fingers along its nose and felt the etching on its face, wondering who had created this beautiful work of art.

Usually fairy tales start off once upon a time, blah, blah, blah. I guess I could start off my story that way, but then the story wouldn’t be right. The truth is, I’m not a princess. And this really isn’t a fairy tale. There is no magic fairy godmother who goes around turning poor girls into princesses and pumpkins into carriages. So if you want that kind of story I suggest you read something else. This story is going to be about me, Ella. Just plain old boring me. I’m just a normal 16-year-old girl. I’m not special or different in any way at all. That is, I never thought I was special, until I met Julian. But he comes in later. You’ll have to start from the beginning. So go on. If you wish…

When I`m not writing I love spending time outdoors communing with nature and observing the wildlife; those inspired moments watching Autumn leaves in lowering sunlight while the birds squabble over their tea, and I munch through several large chunks of dark chocolate washed down with a hot mug of tea. I`m attracted to people from all walks of life who are kind, thoughtful and honest. I enjoy shopping trips and watching TV dramas, including Bates Motel, Downton Abbey and Mr Selfridge, but mostly I love Poldark…. (Well who doesn`t?) Favourite places for a return visit would include Egypt`s Temple of Karnak, (probably the most peaceful place on earth!) The Cairo museum and Italy`s Amalfi coast. I`m also partial to a bracing boat trip across Lake Windermere on route to the little town of Bowness.

Excerpt

October moon casts a pool of suffused silver light onto my pillow as I wait with bated breath, bathing in its ethereal glow.
Presently the waiting is over. The room fills with his essence and a voice breaks through the ether.
`Let me look at you! `
I readily comply, tingling from head to toe as he skims purposefully over my limbs, clothing them in a sheath of living fabric.
There is no movement in the darkness thick like treacle. The temperature drops like a stone, yet warmth ignites my wanton spirit till smouldering flames dance through my spine.
I drift with each new breath upon another. Not a single part unaffected by the pure filtered love that permeates every pore.
A gentle tease of my lips and they awaken to that human hair sensation, delicate and soft. All the while I chase it, flicking the tip of my tongue back and forth as my heart skips and flutters to the dissonant sound of a lone branch rapping at my window.
My hand slips impatiently through the deep velvet black. He finally allows me to touch him. I caress the invisible; a flimsy cobweb on my fingertips to tantalize and tickle.
The curtain wafts to a midnight draft from the window. Shadows bobble and bounce around the room: trees waving, a headlamp flashing.
The echo of a taxi door slams in the street while raised voices and clacking high heel shoes break the stillness. And yet there is a moment strong and silent, a moment of divine gratification; a place he calls absolute, complete paradise, right here right now.
If only the moon would shine forever. If only time could be suspended.
“Please don`t leave me!” I beg with a whisper. “I`m scared you`ll be gone when I wake.”
My eyes grow heavy yet I fear to close them, suppressing tiredness for several more hours totally immersed in his love before I finally succumb to the restraints of my inferior body.
“I love you.” He whispers. “Now sleep!”

He tucked his phone back into his pocket and glanced around again, realizing the entire place smelled like Ella—fragrant. Sweet. Good. He could tell she was still pissed at him though, judging from the way she watched him with hands on both hips. Her ire would have to wait—because as soon as she said a name, he was out of here.

Tracking that motherfucker down.

“Tell me what happened.”

She looked startled for a moment but quickly recovered. “It doesn’t matter,” she said quietly.

“It matters to me. If someone is hurting you, I want to know about it. If you’re scared, I want you to tell me. If you’re frightened of someone, I’ll protect you. And if you tell me who did this, I’ll be out of your hair this instant, because I’m going to fucking kill them. Now start at the beginning.”

Ella looked uncomfortable. “Frank said he’d give me my old job back.”

“Yeah. Got that part.”

“But he wanted…he said….” Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks, and it took every ounce of Brent’s strength not to go to her. She needed to get this out. To tell him what happened.

“I thought I could handle Frank, but I was in way over my head. He wanted to see me outside of work. Told me that I had to sleep with him. I told him no, and he threatened to take my job away. Some of my student loans fell through for next year, so I was desperate. I told him I wouldn’t sleep with him, but I guess he thought he could pressure me. He said he wanted a kiss.”

“And the bruises?”

“He, uh, grabbed me in the hall last night.”

“At work?” Rage burned through him.

“Yes. I came out of the bathroom, and he was pissed that I’d dropped an entire tray of drinks. The guys at the table were total assholes and deserved it. I was going to quit right then and there. But Frank followed me into the back hall. He grabbed my arm and wouldn’t let me go.” Ella sniffed, her watery gaze meeting his. “Then he made me go down the hall to his office.”

Excerpt

I’ll ‘fess up. I’ve creeped into a dark closet. I creeped because I didn’t want anyone else to know I was in there. I even remained silent and still while my husband called my name. I had had it. My heart—and my brain—were nearly broke. I crawled into the dark out of self-preservation. Truth be told, I wasn’t hiding from him. I was hiding from our entire situation if only for a second.

It took only a few minutes, though, for me to realize that hiding out in the closet wasn’t the answer. (Though, frankly, it didn’t hurt for those few minutes either. We all need to get away and catch our breath from time to time.) As I stood there in the dark, I knew that eventually I would have to return to the worries, to the 24/7 work of parenting a child with special needs, to the awful feeling that my best was never going to be quite enough.

But as I pressed my hot forehead against the cool, textured drywall and listened to my husband call out my name, I realized something else too. I wasn’t in this situation alone. There was in fact help, waiting and calling my name right outside—right in the middle of the very mess I was trying to run away from. All I needed to do was respond, open the door and receive it. And—wow!—so it is with God too. All we need do is let go. Give up. And give it to Him. Calm really can be found in the middle of our calamity. We just need to stop shouldering it all ourselves, all alone.

It’s incredibly easy to fall into the trap of thinking that our lives would be so much better, we’d be so much more at peace, if only we didn’t have so many responsibilities, if things were different or if only there were more hours in the day so that we could fit it all in and finally catch our breath. But it’s a trap.

It’s a trap because there will always be pressure. There will always be stuff that needs to get done. There will always be less than ideal circumstances to manage. The key is to find—and experience—the calm in the middle of the calamity, right where we are and in the middle of everything we’re dealing with. This is simultaneously the puzzle and the prize.

Which would be worse: knowing that your dead sister has come back to life and is now a serial killer, or that someone else is the killer… and that person is you?

Six months after Linda’s sister Elizabeth killed herself, Linda has finally gotten her life back to some semblance of normalcy. Until a killer appears who is stalking men … a killer who resembles Elizabeth … a killer who seems somehow familiar to Linda.

And to make matters worse, Detective Steve Anderson, her old high school crush, is assigned to the case. He’s asking Linda all sorts of questions – questions she couldn’t possibly have an answer to.

There’s no reason for him to be investigating Linda. She couldn’t possibly have anything to do with this.

Could she?

Someone else is dead.

Linda paused, her hand reaching for The Riverview Times. The words echoed strangely in her head, bouncing around like some demented ping-pong ball.

Someone else is dead.

Where had that come from? What did it mean?

She stretched her hand forward again to take the paper, but found herself unable to make actual contact with it. Instead, her hand hung there, motionless. Uneasiness crept through her body, as thick as black ink oozing across a table.

All right, now she was being ridiculous. Where on earth was any of this coming from? She shook her head and snatched up the newspaper.

Tucking it under her arm, she hurried to her car, refusing to think about why she had such a curious reluctance to touch it.

She deliberately turned the radio off in her car, not wanting to hear any news. Instead, she drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and watched the clouds scuttle across the dull gray sky. Another beautiful November day in Wisconsin. For the millionth time, she wondered if it would kill the sun, to show its face a little more.

Turning into the parking lot of Bay Mutual Insurance, she thought again of how much she hated her job. And again, she reminded herself that she didn’t have a whole lot of options to choose from.

Linda parked and entered the building, passing the company’s mission statement in the lobby. Bay Mutual offered auto, home, business, health and life insurance to its customers. And squat to its employees, Linda added to herself, as she did every day.

She hung up her coat and headed to the cramped break room for coffee. Carla was already there, pouring herself a cup.

“So, how was your date last night?” Linda greeted her, taking a mug out of the drying rack.

Carla rolled her dark blue eyes, filling Linda’s mug with steaming, black liquid. “Don’t even ask.”

“That good?”

“It started there. Then, it went downhill.” Carla put down the coffee pot, fluffed her short, curly brown hair and opened up the refrigerator for cream. “My mistake was thinking it couldn’t get any worse. Then, I heard the radio this morning. Another dead single man. It’s already nearly impossible to get a decent date in this town. Now, some crazy person is killing the few eligible men out there!”

Someone else is dead. It hit her like a slap in the face, and Linda put her coffee down without drinking it, instinctively knowing she could never force the liquid past the thick sludge that now filled her throat.

Excerpt

The allure of the night is its ability to pull you into its depths, to keep you hidden in its crevices. The darkness wraps around you. Nothing reaches you there.

And you reach nothing.

Have you ever wanted to melt into the darkness? Dissolve into the shadows?

You can lose yourself in the black emptiness. But while you may lose yourself, the night always knows where you are.

Eli Hayes stood alone in the darkness. The night sky was clear, lit by the stars and a perfect quarter moon. Shadows fell across the ground, casting a thick and almost tangible black film. He was aware of the tension in his shoulders and the ache in his jaw. Closing his eyes, he breathed in slow and deep. He stayed that way, quietly meditating, until the pain melted away.

When he opened his eyes again, the shadows followed the path of the gravestones. He squatted in front of a square chunk of marble. He read the name and date slowly, committing it to memory as if he’d later be quizzed on the information. As if it wasn’t already etched in his mind, a permanent fixture there.

He reached out. The stone felt cold against his fingertips. He traced the letters. Deep grooves in cold rock. All that was left at the end of existence.

31st Century.

“Thirty survivors?” asked Steven Moran. “It can’t be! There were only twenty-nine of us!”

He quickly jumped up out of his sickbay bed and grabbed the Super Homo sapiens nurse by the arm, “Can I see the list of survivors? Please, it’s important.”

The enhanced woman waved her hand and a virtual reality image illuminated the list of survivors.

The former Kansas wrestler with Midwestern rugged farm boy features and an impressive muscular physique, even for an enhanced Super Homo sapiens, viewed the list and asked, “Are all of them out of the sleeping pods?”

“Yes…” she replied, with wonder in her voice about his motives.

“That name there, Walter Sikes. He survived?”

“Yes, he’s resting comfortably on a lower deck two floors down.”

“Show me where I can find him?”

She showed him a diagram of the tremendous spacecraft traveling a great distance from Earth. “Why do you want to know about him?”

He dashed out of the ship’s sickbay room without looking back. “Because he died on the mission and shouldn’t be here.”

The nurse sounded the alarm, but Steven was already halfway down the hallway grabbing an orderly to take him on the lift system to get to the right floor and Walter Sikes’ room.

As the lift took him two floors below, a hologram of the ship’s captain, Commander Christine Carroll was projected in front of Steven. “I understand we may have a stowaway?”

“That’s right,” he responded, “I personally witnessed Walter being killed in the initial battle aboard the alien craft. He was cut down by the mysterious entity ruling the Ancient Visitors, aliens or whatever they were. I helped set every one of the survivors in the sleeping pods when we escaped the Ancient Visitors ship’s destruction. I can, without any doubt, say that Walter was not one of them. Whoever that is, it isn’t Walter Sikes.”

“Well then, we’ll need to talk to Mr. Sikes,” said Commander Christine Carroll, an old by-the-book veteran leader, as she mentally linked the conversation to her security detail. “Please apprehend Walter Sikes for questioning and use extreme caution.”

When Steven reached Walter’s sickbay room, he and the arriving security detail found a pair of unconscious nurses lying on the floor next to the recovery bed.

The leader of the security detail tapped his earpiece linked to his mind and the hologram of the ship’s captain reappeared. “The target is not here and is on the run. He is also not showing up on our sensors.”

As security personnel attended the fallen nurses, Steven looked around at the empty sickbay room. He detected the holographic screens that were used to scan patients. “How would he escape the ship?”

Without answering Steven, the Captain ordered, “All security personnel report to the transport docking bay immediately.” Images of Walter Sikes began showing in every corner of the ship.

When Steven and the security detail arrived at the docking bay, they were met by the Captain in person who ordered the door of the docking bay to be opened. When the door wouldn’t open as requested, she ran to the large window looking into the bay. Many of her personnel were scattered along the floor, at the very least, unconscious. It was then that one of the transports powered up and fled the docking bay into space. Without the interior pressure, the transport glided up and out of the docking bay into space. The various unconscious bodies began floating up and out following the transport as the docking bay’s atmosphere was sucked into the darkness of space. Seconds later the wide metal doors shut; the Captain mentally initiated the containment field.

Steven, in all the confusion going on, wondered out loud, “We shouldn’t have come back. Look what we did. We brought one back, and it may be the worst of them all.”

Hearing Steven’s words, the Captain responded, “We’ve had to deal with them in the past, our ancient ancestors had been changed by them. Then there was Bishop Terapion during the Followers of Divinity conflict. It didn’t stop there as there were others.”

Steven ran his hands over his face and through his hair then said, “There were others?”

As the Captain tracked the ship heading toward Earth on the computer in her mind, she ordered the helmsmen to set a course to intercept and then alerted her communication officer to warn Earth Command. She then looked at Steven and repeated, “Yes, there were others…”
