The voices in Keisha’s head know where her fiancé has been left for dead, but who will believe her?

Keisha Moore has a secret which has been kept hidden her entire life. But when her fiancé, Clifford Valdez, disappears and the authorities dismiss it as lovers’ remorse, she has to tell somebody. Can she make anybody understand the four voices in her head are real, and they know where Clifford has been taken? How can she save the man she loves without revealing her deepest secret?

Clifford and Keisha Announce Engagement

Clifford and Keisha spilled through the front door, giggling. Her mother pressed her brows together, puzzled by their sudden entrance and vivacity.

Has the game started?Clifford yelled to whoever was in the den.

Zeke yelled back. Not yet. Youre just in time.

Clifford helped Keisha slip out of her coat. She intentionally left her gloves on. He unwrapped her scarf from her neck and wound it on the coat hanger along with her coat. She turned to do the same for him, except he pulled his gloves off and slid them into his coat pockets. She skipped into the den, giggling like a little girl. Clifford, too, chuckled as he followed close behind her. Zeke and Rose stared with an expectant smile.

Daniel looked up from coloring at the coffee table and laughed. Their effervescent joy was contagious.

Phylliss eyes crinkled as she watched Keisha move between everybody seated and the T.V. Well, for heavens sake, come sit down. Why are you still wearing your gloves?

Oh,Keisha coyly pulled at her right glove. I thought Id keep them on…” She handed the right glove to Clifford whose grin widened as he took it from her. His eyebrows rose as she teasingly pulled at her left glove. “…until I could show you…” She yanked the glove off and held her hand up with the ring facing out. “…this!

OH!Phyllis cried and leaped to her feet.

Daniel looked around, a puzzled look on his face, as the adults ran up to hug Clifford and Keisha. He ran up, too. The National Anthem played on the T.V., but it was ignored. The Moores hugged their future son-in-law. Rose and Zeke clasped hands. Daniel was hoisted on Zekes hip for a five-person group hug. Congratulations were repeated over and over. Even Inez clasped her hands with joy.

When? Bob finally asked.

Keisha glanced at Clifford. He shrugged.

I have no idea.Keisha looked at her mom. A dampened sense of sadness blanketed her joy for a moment. If Mom did have some form of dementia, how long would her memory last? We havent discussed it.

Clifford squeezed her close to his side. Had he read her mind, noticed her concerns for Mom? Soon, I think.

She looked at him sternly. Yeah?

Clifford nodded.

You heard my fiancé.” She nodded. “Soon.

No Word from Clifford

At six oclock Keisha pulled left-over muffins from the display case and sacked them up for the freezer. Clifford hadnt called or texted all day. A gnawing sensation burned in her stomach. Where was he? She scanned the street through the bakerys plate-glass windows. Every call to his cell phone had gone to his voice mail. Another call to the office itself reached the new receptionist, Gloria, who had seen him come in after his morning classes, but hadnt seen him since. But of course, according to Clifford, she was so overwhelmed learning his old job, Santa Claus could have come in and she probably wouldnt have noticed. Keisha had asked for his voice mail and left a message.

An empty feeling stayed with her as she locked the front door and exited out the back.

Deidres voice sounded muffled and sing-song. An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. Tit for tat and all of that.

What? Are you drunk, Deidre? Keisha drove home without the radio on. She wanted to be able to hear her phone chime when Clifford called.

How could I be drunk?

Dont know. How can you talk to me in the first place?

Point taken.

Somebody needs to shut up! Abbie jeered in a sing-song imitation.

Shell figure it out eventually, Deidre replied back but still in the sing-song tone.

Its not your place! Abbie sang.

What? Keisha turned onto her street.

What will I figure out eventually?

You guys make me so mad, sometimes.Keisha shoved the front door open and stomped into her house. This was another gift from Rose after she married Zeke, the deed to Roses parents house. Keisha let her purse drop onto the bench in the mud room, the entry area of the house, and hung up her coat. Glancing at her phone again, with no text reply or missed calls, she decided to call Pastor V.

Lynn Donovan spends her days chasing after her muses, trying to get them to settle down and behave long enough to write down their words and actions. The results have produced short stories published in anthologies: The Clockwork Dragon, Different Dragons II, and Supernatural Colorado. Lynn’s full-length novels include The Wishing Well Curse, Thorns of Betrayal, and Secret Voices. She has also published Rocking Horse Shadows, and Christmas Grace, Signing Seeds. Other stories are hovering out there somewhere, so keep a look out for Fertility Pirates, Echoes from the Loft, and White Blossom Cottage.

Lynn enjoys reading and writing Christian, Paranormal, and Speculative Fiction. But you never know what her muses will come up with for a story, you could see a novel under any given genre. All that can be said is keep your eyes open, cause these muses are not sitting still for long! Oops, there they go again…

Tens List

Top 10 things the voice(s) in your head say (as answered by Lynn Donovon).

Thats funny, considering Secret Voices is about four distinctly different voices in my characters headbut putting that aside:

I have a running dialog in my head all the time. Lets see if I can put it into ten things.

  1. Im hungry.

Its not time to eat.

But, I want a snack.

Oh, all right.

  1. What are the bees doing? (we have bees and they fascinate me! I go out and check on them all the time, like a new mother checks to see if her newborn is breathing. <giggle>

  2. Theres chocolate in the kitchen

  3. What do we need from the grocery store?

  4. I want to watch TV.

You need to go write.

  1. Ooo, look at that bird!

  2. Hey, I know you’re writing that story, but I have this idea

  3. What day is it?

  4. What time is it?

What if there was a previous dominant species that we replaced after they screwed it up?”

Jessica arched her eyebrows. “You’re not going to bring up the dinosaurs, are you?”

Yes, the dinosaurs, exactly! Think about it. The whole world started off with Pangaea, one super continent where all the dinosaurs lived. Then, boom, all of this sudden something happens and wipes them all out. Scientists keep saying it was probably a meteor, but what if it wasn’t? Think about it. What would a meteor have done to the planet? Set it on fire? Filled the sky with ash to choke out most other life? Doesn’t that sound exactly like something the Fire Elemental would do?”

I’m impressed you know about Pangaea. But it doesn’t change the fact that if I didn’t know you better, I’d say you were a giant stoner.”

The Earth Elemental could have easily made Pangaea for the dinosaurs,” Sean continued as though he hadn’t heard her. “After they screwed it up somehow, the Fire Elemental wipes them out, the Earth Elemental splits the continent, and they start over, only this time with primitive mankind. It makes sense.”

Jessica pinched the bridge of his nose. “I want to tell you that none of that makes sense, but we just held a conversation with an Easter Island head before Xander become the embodiment of the Earth itself. Anything’s possible at this point.”

Do you think they ever tried a Xander before?”

Jessica paused. “A Xander?”

Sean glanced away from the blond and stared across the ocean. “They must have had Warriors for each of the elements. The fact that a Velociraptor Fire Warrior is a pretty badass mental image notwithstanding, do you think they tried this before? Creating someone who can stop the cycle?”

I don’t really know—“

Because they failed,” Sean said bluntly. He turned back toward his girlfriend. “If they tried it, they failed because the dinosaurs were wiped out. I just keep thinking that we’re not taking this seriously enough, and I know that’s ironic coming from me. I keep worrying that the Fire Elemental is just sitting back laughing right now, knowing that it kicked the crap out of a Sarcosuchus Water Elemental once before and is about to do the same to Xander.”

I think by this point we’re all taking this seriously,” Jessica said. “Just because you’re joking doesn’t mean you’re not; we’ve known each other long enough to know it’s just your defense mechanism.”

They sat in silence, watching the lapping waves and trying not to see the lava pouring into the ocean not far away. It was peaceful, sitting on a deserted island in the middle of the Pacific. It was easy to ignore the fact that the world was coming to an end. Sean mentally noted Easter Island as a place to visit, once this was all over.

Jessica chuckled softly, disrupting Sean’s musings. He turned toward her inquisitively. “What’s so funny?”

Pterodactyl Wind Warriors,” she said.

For a moment, he merely arched an eyebrow before he started snickering. Sean couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the thought. They both laughed until their sides hurt. It felt good just to laugh for no particular reason, to forget about the insanity of their lives for just a moment.

Vanishing Act Blitz Presented by Juniper Grove Book Solutions

A fresh start at college is exactly what Kate needs to ease the burden of her family secrets. When she meets the confident and charming Aaron Jackson, she weaves a new history for herself to fit into his seemingly perfect life. But the past refuses to stay where it belongs, causing a rift between their contrasting worlds.

When Ben reappears in Kate’s life, she is only pulled deeper into the childhood that she’s tried to forget. Driven by the abuse and pain that still lingers within him, Ben seeks Kate’s help in making a change. But in this journey for retribution, lines blur between courage, justice, and revenge.

Bound by their shared and damaged youth, Kate is forced to choose sides, and fast. The final act is almost here, and time is running out.

Vanishing Act is a Lingering Echoes novel that can be read as part of the series or as a stand alone story. Fueled by the scars from an experience in foster care that no child should have to endure, Vanishing Act touches on serious issues that can continue to impact abuse victims well into their adult lives. Vanishing Act is an emotional drama with a sweet romance mixed in.

My vision blurred like I was walking outside in the rain. It may as well have been raining, with how emotionally drenched and defeated I felt as I marched out of my neighborhood. I didn’t know where I was going. Despite the familiar street, I felt lost and confused. I just knew I needed to keep moving, afraid that if I stood still, the storm of emotions would drown me.

Aaron became a silent companion at my side, keeping fast pace with my hurried steps. My thoughts stewed inside my head, a dangerous concoction of fear, hurt, and fury. My whole life I had worked to salvage this family. My entire purpose for going to college was to help us survive, even if our heads were barely above water. But it seemed the minute I’d left the house, both father and son were falling apart, sabotaging my efforts.

Aaron seemed to sense I was about to boil over because he eventually took my hand and pulled me onto the grass. He stood in front of me with both hands on my shoulders, trying to look into my eyes. I shook my head, knowing if I spoke one word that too many more would spew out of my mouth—bitter and resentful—and I’d never be able to take them back. Aaron’s hands moved to my back and he wrapped me in his arms, pulling my face against his chest. His strong hands pressed into my shoulder blades, holding me together like fractured porcelain.

I let the warm tears fall, one by one. I hoped that by keeping my eyes pulled tightly shut, that the tears wouldn’t find an exit. But they did—streaming one after the other until each droplet became a river, a driving current of emotion merging together. It would have felt dangerous without Aaron’s embrace, but I felt safe anchored in his arms.

Grant Wishes Book Blitz by Juniper Grove Book Solutions

What’s your name?” the man asked. His voice was pleasant and warm with a bit of an accent that Cathren could spend hours listening to under other circumstances.

Cathren,” she informed him as she pulled on the smile she used for difficult customers.

Cathren.” The man repeated her name with a bit of a roll in the ‘r’. “Such a fitting name.” His eyes twinkled with merriment before getting serious. “Well, Cathren, my name is Patrick, and I don’t know how you’ve done it, but you caught me. Now what do you want?” Patrick leaned his elbow on the counter. The corner of his mouth turned up in amusement.

What?” Cathren asked, confused.

Patrick pushed the sleeve of his sweater up and showed her his forearm. A bloody fingerprint stained his skin. “What do you want?” he asked again, holding the toned arm out for her to see.

I am so sorry.” Cathren gasped as she pulled out some paper towels from under the counter. Squirting some hand sanitizer on them, she wiped her blood off his arm. The blood had perfectly covered a small tattoo of a shamrock. It was an odd place to put the clover—seeing as he had no other tattoos—and she couldn’t have hit it more exactly if she tried.

It’s fine, lass.” The man pushed her worrying hands away and glanced at the tattoo on his arm. “Looks like you get three.” He looked back up at her. “Now, what do you want?”

Cathren just shook her head, not understanding him. “What do you mean?”

Patrick let out a resigned breath. “Traditionally, when you catch a leprechaun, they have to barter for their release.” A wry smirk slipped across his face. “And since I couldn’t stop the magic from settling, it looks like I’m going to be held to that tradition. It’s just turned into your lucky day. You get three wishes. Now, what do you want?”

Granting-Wishes (1)

Leprechauns don’t exist. Or that’s what Cathren has always believed, but a chance encounter changes everything. When she saves a handsome stranger from a nasty electrical shock, not only does he claim to be one, but he also insists on granting her wishes. Now she must decide— is he insane, or a magical creature of lore? Unsure which is true, she grabs at the first three wishes she can think of: true love, happiness, and waffles. A tall order for most men, but not for Patrick Brogan. With a little persistence and just a touch of magic, anything is possible.

Why can’t you believe that I am real?” he asked. “Because you’re not. Look at you with your golden skin andwings, wearing a skirt. How can I believe you’re real?” “I can prove it.”

Oh, yeah? I dare you.”

Do you, now?” David raised his brow.

Double dare. And you should wear a skirt that looks more like pants for the occasion.”

Your clever quips are very delightful, my lovely. Are you positively sure about this?”

I’ve been waiting for this for three months.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Bring it on.”

Very well. But I have to warn you, I’m quite the competitor.”

You’re proposing a wager?” I nodded.

If I win, you’ll leave my dreams forever,” I said. He gazed at me for a moment. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I thought I saw a trace of a grin on his face.

If I should win, you will believe me when I say I’m not a dream,” David said.

If you say so,” I snickered. “I guess this is goodbye since I’ll be winning.” “And…” he said

There’s more?”

And…you will never again come here.”

Okay,” I said. “Fair enough.”

And…” he said again.

That’s too many ‘ands’.”

And…” he continued, “I bid you not farewell, but good morrow.”

David tipped his head as he disappeared, leaving behind a cloud of golden dust.

Alex in Wanderland! Review! Giveaway!

I wonder as I wander………

The Stats

Title: Alex in Wanderland

Author: R.J. Hore

Published: May 5th 2015

Publisher: Champagne Book Group

Genre: Fantasy

Recommended Age: 12+

A mismatched modern married couple, Alexander and Alexis, find themselves in an alternate universe when their fight over his latest purchase goes all wrong.

How would you feel if you were considered to be the latest saviors of the land, with hints of a slow and painful death as your reward? All they have to do is fulfill an ancient prophecy. Their traveling companions: the priest, the protector, and the thief are all suspect. Everyone seems to be out to stop them.

A tale of adventure and romance, filled with pitfalls and leering villains. Did anyone mention there might be hungry dragons too?

I have to admit, I’m not much into fantasy.  I’m not much into books that would probably appeal to a middle-schooler.  I’m just not.  I don’t like most Disney movies either.  “Adult” Disney movies, like the Pirates of the Carribean–yes, Mulan–no.  I’ve had “Let it Go” stuck in my head for two years, and I really wish it would let me go.

That being said, Alex in Wanderland, is a fun book that can work on the purely juvenile, face value level, or it can be elevated to a more adult level and scrutinized through the lenses of religion and world politics.  Adults, look at it as a modern reworking of nameless ancient myths.  You have the players: the thief, the protector, the priest, the prophecy, the goddess, the saviors, the “twins”… goes on an on.  Plus there’s cute little jokes thrown in too.  The goddess’ name is “Gladys”.

The opening scene was probably my favorite, though, because some of the things that Alexis, the wife, say to Alex are the exact same things that my husband says to me.  Except, he’s the spend thrift and I’m the one scolding about the gadgets.

Overall, like any good myth, it’s about pushing the boundaries of the expectations that society and yourself have for you.  That’s what happens.

Excerpt from Alex in Wanderland:

Alexander’s stomach churned. He was kneeling, sprawled on a floor of cold stone, not bare hardwood. Head spinning, eyes closed, he reached out for something to cling to and grabbed hold of fabric and flailing arms.

Alexis screamed in his ear. She doubled over as though ready to bring up supper—if she’d had any. She clutched at him and opened her eyes.

His ears buzzed as if his head hosted an unruly crowd of cicadas. The world outside continued to revolve.

Alexis opened her mouth again, but no further sound came out. Her clenched knuckles bulged white where they gripped his arm.

He clung to Alexis shaking, and using her as a prop, staggered to his feet. The world around him slowly came into focus and the sensation of sickening movement ceased.

A loud ringing sound echoed inside Alexander’s skull. Was that the doorbell? Who could that be? It didn’t sound like the doorbell, more like a Chinese gong. Where did that come from?

They clung together like a pair of drunken dancers, and then steadied. The sky above glowed with a million stars displayed through parting clouds. Darkness stretched to the horizon, except for the shimmering ring of a thousand pinpoints of flickering light somewhere at his feet.

Alexander’s straining eyes accustomed to the gloom and he stared around. He stood, clutching Alexis and swaying on a platform, or maybe it was a flat roof, at the top of what appeared to be a high building. A loud ringing echoed through the night. Someone pounded on a gong, a large one by the sound.

“What was that?” Alexander gasped. His stomach did a flip-flop.

He smelled wood smoke, or perhaps some sweet incense. Alexis held a firm grip on his arm.

She moaned. “What happened? Oh, my head.”

“The Twins have come, The Twins have come,” someone shouted hoarsely from close behind him.

A roar rumbled up from far below. He turned around, Alexis still hanging on tight to him.

A round, bald man garbed in a yellow robe stared at them wide-eyed. The glow from a nearby torch gleamed gold off his nose ring. He shouted, “Quick, acolytes assist them.”

A half-dozen men, equally hairless and garbed in what appeared to Alexander to be lemon-yellow bathrobes, rushed forward from behind a high, triangular archway and pressed around them, bowing and bobbing like a flock of hungry pigeons. The newcomers surrounded the clinging pair, reaching out for them with painted nails.

“Get your filthy hands off of me,” Alexis cried out.

Confessions of an Imperfect Caregiver–Spotlight & Giveaway

This is a book that everyone should read.  With the American population living longer and longer, chances are that you will have to care for an elderly family member at some point in your life, if you haven’t already.  It’s never easy, especially if dementia is involved.  I took care of my mother-in-law from my first marriage who suffered from Alzheimer’s, I helped take care of my maternal grandmother who was just old and in failing health, I took care of my first husband who had a chronic and debilitating injury, and I’m currently helping to take care of my paternal grandmother who suffers from dementia.  She knows that something is wrong, but she doesn’t understand what’s wrong, and she’s extremely frustrated that she can’t find her car keys so she can drive her car into the river.  Well, we hid the keys.  My children have been a great help with her though, because they don’t mind at all helping her tear the house apart looking for her car keys, and they absolutely delight in helping her try out every single key that she finds in the ignition of her car.  So, read the book, buy it for a family member, and remember to look up support groups in your area and respite services for caregivers if you find yourself in Bobbi’s situation.

Bobbi Carducci’s life was about to change. Her ill father-in-law’s odd behavior was a mystery when he came to live with her and Mike. For the next seven years Bobbi did everything she could to save him from himself – while he tried to convince everyone that he didn’t need her and that she was crazy.

A nonfiction that reads like a novel, Confessions of an Imperfect Caregiver, is the story of a real family dealing with one of the fastest growing issues of our day. Caring for seriously ill family members at home. Meet Bobbi Carducci. Laugh, cry and pray with her as she does the hardest job she ever loved.

Every 26 seconds another person is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in the U.S.

“For fifteen years I’d known him as my gentle, henpecked father-in-law. A man who longed for a little peace and quiet and always seemed eager to please. As saddened as I was by my mother-in-law’s passing, I had believed that living in my home, free from the constant yelling and criticism, he’d come out of his shell and begin to enjoy life.

Sitting in a hospital parking lot so many years later, I was just beginning to discover how very wrong I’d been.

Had he been pretending all these years? Is the real Rodger the one who announced to the nursing staff that I’m useless and no damned good? Does the medicine he takes every day allow him to be himself, or does it mask his true nature? Who is this man who lives in my house and paces the halls late at night? …

Where did I go wrong? What did I miss and how can I make sure this doesn’t happen again? Those questions and more went unanswered as I covered the miles between the hospital and home, my mind and body too tired to cope with the guilt I felt at that moment. Despite all my good intentions, I’d let him down.”

Though I’ve never been here before, the darkness is familiar, comforting. Above me, the moon reaches its apex, the soft, full glow illuminating the sky so the stars are barely visible. I nestle against the bark of a large pine tree. There’s no snow on the ground yet, but the air is heavy with the promise of a coming storm. The smell is crisp and clean and not at all like home.

The Hollow Tower.

Subconsciously, my hand goes to my arm, gently stroking the device wound around my wrist. The Tether is a Tesla invention, something the Hollows aren’t supposed to use. But there was no way was I going to try to get permission for this little trip, so I made an exception. Ember brought a few Tethers with her when she defected from The Institute. I doubt she’ll even be upset when she figures out that I pinched one from Nobel’s lab. He’s working on re-creating them for us, a welcome alternative to the stomach churning Contra we normally use. In the past few weeks, things have changed rapidly in The Hollow Tower, and one of those things is my newfound friendship with Ember—a girl I’d been all too willing to kill just a few short weeks ago.

The enemy of my enemy and all that.

No, this was better. Getting permission would mean going to Gloves for Contra, and he would want to know why I needed it. I’m not ready to face him—or the others—just yet. Not until I’m absolutely sure.

During my last mission, I’d found one of Tesla’s old journals. I wouldn’t have thought anything of it, if not for the emblem sketched on the first page, the symbol so like the mark I carried below my naval.

As a rule, Rifters don’t remember our pasts; it’s all part of the process, the washing away of our memories. Lex and Ember are the only ones I know who recovered those lost years, who know who they are and where they come from. For them, it is a mixed blessing. It brought them back together as brother and sister, but also brought back the truth about everything they lost.

And they lost so much.

I was never curious about my past before that. The Hollow Tower had been my home since I was only a few years old— much younger than most of the others when they were brought in. I always assumed there was something tragic, some dark reason I was taken so young. And unlike Lex, I was perfectly content not remembering.

Until now.

I creep through the woods to the dirty window of the cabin, stepping carefully in my tall, black leather boots. The slightest noise will alert the paranoid man inside to my presence. Luckily, I have plenty of practice sneaking up on people. Inside, Tesla fiddles with a rat’s nest of antenna wiring that drops through a duct in the roof. Crouching down, I blow on my hands and rub them together. Being at fourteen thousand feet elevation smack in the middle of the Rocky Mountains isn’t exactly my idea of a good time. I have a major headache, my toes are numb, and my nose is running like a leaky faucet. I sniffle hard and my ears pop from the pressure building in my sinuses. It’s going to take a week’s worth of hot showers just to get warm again.

I watch through the glass as Tesla gets frustrated with the wiring, throws a handful of tools against the wall, and begins pacing back and forth, running his hands through his jet-black hair and down his face, yelling at the wad of copper filament on the wood floor. Finally, he slumps into a chair facing a chalkboard on the wall. Pouring himself a drink from a half-empty bottle of amber-colored liquid on the table beside him, he rests the glass against his forehead.

This is one of the few times I’ve been able to catch him alone. For a recluse, he somehow manages to keep a constant orbit of assistants and hangers-on nearby. Tonight, however, he’s working alone, having long since sent the others away in a fit of frustration.

The window has warped with age, forming ripples in the glass. Between that and the frost beginning to form, it’s getting harder to see. Trying to ignore the cold biting at my fingers and the tips of my nose and ears, I lean forward, forcing my eyes to focus through the distortion. This is actually the closest I’ve ever been to him. He sits there, red faced and sweaty, swigging another mouthful of alcohol. His suit coat has a hole in the elbow and half of the collar is folded inside the jacket. His shoes and pants are muddy to the knees. I’ve never seen him so disheveled, or so drunk. I check the date on my Tether. It’s my third trip to get what I need from him. I’ve tried twice before, in other times and other places, only to wind up empty-handed. If I don’t get what I came for tonight, I don’t know when I’ll be able to try again. The others are already growing suspicious of my random disappearances—especially Lex. He’s entirely too tuned into me. It’s hard to keep things from him. Unlike the others, he has an uncanny ability to see through me, and he never hesitates to call me on my crap.

I kind of love that about him.

But as with Gloves and the others, I am stuck keeping secrets from him. Right now, all I have is a pile of questions with no answers. What I found written in the tattered journal pages read like fiction—the insane ramblings of a lunatic scientist. But there was something else too, bits and pieces that when put together…

Bast rushed through the forest while trying to maintain some measure of stealth. She flicked her ears in every direction and listened for anything unusual. So far, only natural sounds filled the forest.

The air was crisp and sunlight filtered through the leaves. The perfect day for her first assignment. She clenched her jaw, measured her breathing, and straightened her tail. She needed this assignment to go well. Only then could she be recognized as an adult.

Scouts from every one of the clans had seen the giant metal ship—something that large and with such an unnatural shape could only be a ship—come slowly down to the ground. If it kept going without a change in its speed or direction, it would land in the part of the Large Grassland which fell inside in her clan’s territory. Besides, where could it have come from? What sort of creature would travel through the stars on such a craft?

She approached the edge of the forest and looked around for a nice bit of cover. She found a line of bushes between a stand of trees. It would work perfectly and provide an escape back into the forest if it became necessary. She sat on her haunches behind the brush, curled her tail around her feet, and licked a speck of dust off one of the white patches of fur on her paw. The ship should land soon.

“It could be crashing too…” she mused aloud.

But the scouts and scientists had reported it was on a stable course and wasn’t on fire or anything. She liked surprises–for the most part–and this would certainly be an interesting sight. A faint, high-pitched noise came from the west. She poked her nose from the bush and raised her whiskers in that direction. Nothing yet. She waited a little longer. The sound grew louder, and a slight wind blew across the plain.

Aaron has had a few different jobs, ranging from computer tech support, to real-estate, and lawn and farm sales and service. He also enjoys photography and reading, and has been a Star Trek and Star Wars fan for as long as he can remember.

The Psygen Chronicles, Book 1: A New Threat is Aaron’s first novel.

Interview between me (purple) and Aaron (brown)!

1) Describe your relationship with a good book.

Well, I like to take it dinner and just talk for a while… 😉

Okay, seriously, a gook book sucks me into story. It’s kinda like the holodeck in Star Trek. I don’t notice the outside world, and I don’t want to put it down.

2) When did you first start writing and what was the first thing that you wrote that you were proud of?

I first started writing in kindergarten. I think my penmanship was better then than it is now…

My first effort at a novel was in Jr. High. We were assigned to write a short story, and mine kinda got carried away. It was a Robinson Crusoe type story. I got an A on the assignment, but never finished the novel as I lost the floppy disk it was saved on.

3) Please describe your work ethic as an author.

That’s something I need to work on… I have periods where I’ll obsess over the story and crank out a lot of words, then periods where I’ll all but ignore the story. I need to be more consistant with writing output. In the meantime, If anyone asks, I’m not slacking off, I’m letting the story rest, and/or letting my subconscious work on a problem… 😉

4) How do you balance your work as an author with the other aspects of your life?

Ug, that’s hard. See the above question.

5) Why did you write this book?

Whenever I’m not doing something, I’m off in imagination land. Some of it’s fan-fic (and I don’t want to inflict that on the word.. 😉 ) and some of it I just had to tell. This story is one of those. I just had to write it, and that reminded me of how much fun I had working on that novel in Jr. High (and that got me to wondering why I hadn’t kept writing…)

6) What experiences from your past do you find yourself drawing upon repeatedly for inspiration in your work?

I don’t think there’s one theme I keep going back to, other than love of science fiction: cool gadgets, exploration, and what people would do if this stuff was real.

7) What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years, both as an author and in your outside life?

Right now I’m editing a story with the working title of Wings of Truth. It’s kind of a sci-fi/action adventure/romance. I’d like to get that published, as well as the next book or two in the Psygen Chronicles.

I get to have an outside life? *wanders outside* AH! Evil, bright yellow thing! *scurries back inside*

8) Since you are a storyteller, please tell one good lie about yourself.

I really despise technology, and just write sci-fi to point out the follies in relying on all that new-fangled stuff.

Thanks Aaron for answering my questions!  I know I ask hard questions, but they’re what people really want to know.

Isis can control her dreams. Or she could—until recently. The creature in her nightmares has been haunting her for months. As if being dumped wasn’t bad enough, now she dreads going to sleep. She decides to confront the creature and win back some of her peace; only, she finds that he’s not a monster and he’s not a dream. A sacrifice for love, a shocking discovery and a jealous ex-boyfriend blur the lines between reality and dreams, making it hard to tell who the real monsters are. Who would’ve known…that sometimes love is lethal?

Wow!  I’ve known some monsters before, but this monster sounds like Boo Radley and Godzilla rolled up into one!  I’m really excited to see how this is all going to play out!

Eros sighed and closed his eyes. “I cannot help you. I’m sorry.”

Yes, you can, Eros. You must. You have no idea what it’s like to need someone like you need the flow of your own blood.”

David, you will never be able to procreate from this relationship. It’s against the law. My answer is firm. I can’t help you.”

Eros pressed his temples as if attempting to release the pressure of my petition.

Eros… I’ve done something to prove my love for her. But I see that your support is too much to ask, brother. I shouldn’t have come.”

Wait. Hear my thoughts on the matter. To be in love with a human…that’s impossible. You know the prohibitions of such acts. The law is impenetrable.” He walked to the bar again to serve himself another glass of wine. “You mentioned you had done something to prove your love. What exactly have you done, Romeo?”

Do you really have to ask?” I sighed.

I need an answer if you want my help.”

I gifted her something of mine.”

O Mon Dieu…”

The Star Crestmy lifeit belongs to her now.”

Merde.” Eros dropped his drink for a second time. “Dahveed, you have done the unthinkable.”

I stared at the shards of glass on the hardwood floor and nodded. “It’s done.”

You’ve gone insane. It’s suicide!”

And who has written so eloquently of the monstrous beauty of adolescent love?  The lovely Nely Cab!

Nely Cab is a Writer of stuff, a Master Coffee Drinker, a Food Maker & Eater, an Imaginary World Conqueror, and an Air Breather. She talks to herself—a lot—in her South Texas home while she plots stories about fantasy worlds and sips coffee from a pitcher. She’s known for cooking far too much food and has a tendency to overdo…well, everything. It is rumored that she is fabulous. Nely Cab is the best-selling author of the Creatura series.
